It’s all in the accessories

April 29, 2010

Men, I heard your responses to last week’s post, The Attitude of Shopping. I get that you prefer to find what you want quickly and get out without wasting any time.

So if you’re not looking to make over your wardrobe, one thing you can do is accessorize. I know, I know. The word, “accessorize,” probably makes you think of your wife or girlfriend’s handbags and heels, and your eyes roll to the back of your head. Hear me out.

Although men don’t have as many styles of clothing to choose from, the simplest outfit can be transformed with the right shoes, a hat or a well-placed piece of statement jewelry. These show you’re making an effort but don’t require you to overhaul what you already have.

Sunglasses are the first accessories that come to mind. Simple. So many styles to choose from. Makes a statement. And practical.

Sure, you can go with a baseball cap — and there’s nothing wrong with that — by why not stand out from the crowd? And cotton belts go perfectly with linen shorts and flip-flops for summer.

A cool piece of jewelry, intentionally placed, can be just what you need to mix up your look. Apparently some guys go bonkers over watches. Personally I don’t get it (my phone is my watch), but here are a couple of links recommended by a male co-worker for finding high-quality watches at discounted prices: www.watchdoddy.com (which compiles the best deals of the day — most expire daily) and www.jomashop.com (which also includes other accessories).

I’m loving the retro sneakers. And who doesn’t love flip-flops during summer? (Just please make sure you’re feet are clean and groomed.) But when you’re dressing to impress, why not try a classic look in Italian suede.

You don’t have to transform your look overnight. Just try adding a different piece here and there to mix it up a little, and accessories are a great place to start!

Good note that your feet should be well-groomed — men may shy away from pedicures, but a lot of feet hanging out during the summer look like they belong to cavemen and could really use a scrub.
