Back to Basics

May 6, 2010

When I go shopping, sometimes I have a hard time staying focused.

I may go in for a simple cardigan, and leave with a new floral dress. I always crave the statement pieces, when what I really need are some basics to go with them.

A few weeks ago I went into H&M looking for a black cardigan. I found one. But when I went in the dressing room, I also took a floral top and a floral dress. Sadly (but fortunately for my bank account), neither worked for me. I actually walked out with only the black cardigan.

Here are some of the basics I’ve been working to build along with a few of my solid go-to items:

• Camis: These are great for layering. I use them all the time with V-neck tops that are a little too low-cut. I never thought of buying a nude cami, but I saw them on sale one day at Old Navy. I’ve probably worn it more than the back one. It works great under thin and light-colored tops — no one wants to see your bra in public.

• The basic flat: I have been through so many pairs of black flats. Sure, it’s fun to wear colorful and patterned shoes, but black flats go with nearly everything. My current pair came from Target, and I wear them all the time.

• Cardigans: Great for keeping warm in a drafty office or hiding spaghetti straps (or a strapless top).

• A variety of belts: Can’t go wrong with a basic black. Different sizes, depending on whether you’re wearing it on your hips (with jeans) or your natural waist (belted cardigan, anyone?).

• Jewelry basics: Some stud earrings and a pendant necklace are the perfect go-to, and they can help in building a professional look.

• Jeans: Slouchy, skinny, dark, worn. Whatever you’re in the mood for.

I’ve built my basics pretty well, but the area in which I’m severely lacking is belts. I don’t remember the last time I bought a belt, so most of mine are from the high school years. I really need to invest in some I can wear with dresses and cardigans.

I know shopping often means finding new pretty things. But when you’re getting dressed in the morning, you’ll thank yourself when your basics collection is solid.

I did the same thing with the nude cami. I didn’t think I’d wear it, but I wore it a ton (til it broke and I have yet to get another). I have a ton of chunky necklaces and earrings and rings, but I wear either my silver balls or pearls almost every day. Makes me regret buying those crazy big flower earrings.

I can really relate to this post. I need to build up my basics, especially for work, but it’s so easy to get distracted by all the other cute stuff in the store. I do wear my nude cami all the time though, and really need to buy more professional belts. Mine have flower designs that worked well in high school, but not the office.
