Fashion 140

I realize that Fashion 140 was more than two weeks ago. I realize I haven’t blogged in awhile. I have nothing to say except that I’ve been busy. And apparently I’m doing a triathlon in two months so I should probably see if I still remember how to swim. And I should learn what the gears on my bike do.

Regardless, I don’t feel like I necessarily learned a whole lot at Fashion 140, but it was fun listening to people — such as Elle’s Joe Zee — discuss two of my favorite topics (fashion and social media, in case that wasn’t obvious). Here are a few fun takeaways:

  • Women represent 58% of online spending – dominant shoppers in all categories, which guarantees social retail will take off.
  • Social media is far more suited for fashion than traditional media because taste makers can monitor trends within customer base.
  • Gilt Groupe founder Alexandra Wilkis Wilson discussed how Gilt came about. She and her partner didn’t even have a legit business plan!

Joe Zee spoke after the Fashion 140 crew asked him on Twitter!

  • Joe Zee: print has to be so much smarter now because they have to figure out what won’t be stale in 4 months !
  • Tumblr is huge for fashion brands now. Even Vogue has a Tumblr presence.
  • Pop up shops are brilliant for people who get bored easily (i.e., just about everybody these days)

So, a few questions:

Do you use social media (specifically Twitter and Tumblr) to connect with your favorite fashion brands?
